Gucci Names Alessandro Michele its New Creative Director | IamJuanC
Following the departure of Frida Giannini as creative director after nine years, Gucci will soon announceAlessandro Michele as her successor. Although relatively unknown to the fashion world, Michele, 42, took charge of the fashion house’s 2015 fall/winter collection after Giannini’s earlier-than-expected exit. He subsequently delivered an androgynous range of menswear that harked back to the sexy Tom Ford days of the label. As far as his resumé is concerned, Michele worked as an associate to Giannini, overseeing leather goods, shoes, jewelry and homeware. In September, he added the role of creative director of porcelain maker Richard Ginori 1735 SpA, which Gucci bought back in 2013.

Porsche Officially Debuts the 918 Spyder | IamJuanC
Porsche has officially unveiled the 918 Spyder after months of teasers and prototypes. Billed as Porsche’s challenger to the McLaren P1 and Ferrari LaFerrari, the 918 Spyder is unique in that it pairs a traditional, mid-mounted 4.6 liter V8 engine with a trio of electric motors for a combined power output of 887 horsepower. With the engine and electric motors running in sync, the 918 will do 0-62 mph in 2.8 seconds before topping out at a respectable 186 mph. While it certainly won’t live up to the performance of its two main competitors, with a price tag starting at $845,000 USD compared to the estimated seven-figure price tags of the LaFerrari and P1, it’s a reasonable trade-off. The 918 Spyder is set to go on sale in limited numbers starting in 2014.

The New Fastest Helicopter on Earth Flies at Over 300 MPH | IamJuanC
The new Eurocopter X3 set new precedents for helicopters, hitting a new cruising speed of 293 mph and topping out at 302 mph during a descent. Based on the Eurocopter EC155, the X3 is a hybrid helicopter that is outfitted with a pair of short wings with propellers in addition to its five-blade main and tail rotors. These added propellers help provide up to 80 percent of the craft’s lift and are, together with the rotors, powered by two 2270 HP Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM322 turboshaft engines.
Former CEO of Eurocopter Lutz Bertling anticipates the X3 seeing a future market for commuting passengers due to its speed combined with a low noise level relative to planes:
“Helicopters can fly relatively fast and the noise footprint for people living around the airport is relatively similar to current traffic noise, so vertical lift can still play a role in commuting people, providing you can design an aircraft that delivers higher speed at reasonable cost. I believe we could well see the first serial products which could do the job with a smaller number of passengers—say 19 seats—at the beginning of the 2020s, and I could imagine seeing larger aircraft with 30-40 seats in the mid-’20s.”
Christian Louboutin Dandy Pik Pik Velours | IamJuanC
It’s not your best option for the airport, certainly, but Christian Louboutin‘s Dandy Pik Pik Velours has just released for fans of the designer’s red-soled — and dangerously spiky — silhouettes. The dandified slip-on style is described as the Louis Pik Pik in loafer form, and comes in black calfskin suede and the brand’s signature spiked-and-studded makeup. Available now online at Christian Louboutin.
Kanye West Talks ‘Yeezus,’ ‘Watch The Throne,’ Christianity and More | IamJuanC
The amount of gold to be drawn from Kanye West‘s new interview with W Magazine bears a striking resemblance to the Watch the Throne album art itself. Coincidentally, the rapper candidly tackles his collaborative work with Jay-Z in the new interview, as well as a bevy of other juicy bites including his own sex tape, his likeness to Hermes, and the city in which he finds the most inspiration. All of the below ideas float around in the context of Yeezus, yet, lest we forget, Kanye is an endless source of inspiration both on and off the mic. Enjoy select excerpts from the interview below, while the full piece can be read on W Magazine‘s website.
On his decision to record in Paris:
“In Paris, you’re as far as possible from the land of pleasant smiles,” West says. “You can just trip on inspiration—there are so many people here who dedicate their lives to excellence.”
The song “I Am A God”:
West was informed that he’d be invited to a widely anticipated runway show only on the condition that he agree not to attend any other shows. “So the next day I went to the studio with Daft Punk, and I wrote ‘I Am a God,’?” West says. “Cause it’s like, Yo! Nobody can tell me where I can and can’t go. Man, I’m the No. 1 living and breathing rock star. I am Axl Rose; I am Jim Morrison; I am Jimi Hendrix.” West is not smiling as he says this, and his voice is getting louder with each sentence. “You can’t say that you love music and then say that Kanye West can’t come to your show! To even think they could tell me where I could and couldn’t go is just ludicrous. It’s blasphemous—to rock ’n’ roll, and to music.”
On why he chose the title “I Am A God”:
“I made that song because I am a god,” he says finally. He laughs for a second, then stops. “I don’t think there’s much more explanation. I’m not going to sit here and defend shit. That shit is rock ’n’ roll, man. That shit is rap music. I am a god. Now what?”
On narcissism:
“On one end, I try to scale it back,” he says. “Because I don’t want to close any of the doors needed to create the best product possible. But my ego is my drug. My drug is, ‘I’m better than all you other mother***ers. Kiss my a**!’?”
On having almost released his own sex tape after it was on sale last fall:
“For the most part, I’d rather people have one of those home videos than some of the paparazzi photos that get published,” he says. “At least I recorded the shit myself. That tape couldn’t have hurt me in any way if it came out—it could only have helped.” He finally decided against releasing it, but don’t be surprised if he changes his mind. “Now, I just do exactly what I want, whenever I want, how the fuck I want,” West says. “ ‘Fuck you’ is my message.”
On wealth:
“I’m not a billionaire; I’m just a millionaire. But I’m the youngest guy I know who has this much interest in design and the ability to actually get some of it. So that makes me an important cog in the wheel.”
On design:
“Furniture is my superobsession now. Furniture and pornography, still. The porn thing has never left since I was in high school.”
On Watch the Throne:
“It was like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates talking at the same time. You know which one of us was Steve.”
On doing everything:
“You know how they say, ‘Jack of all trades, master of none’? I want to be master of all. And not even to be a jack but a king. In fact, not even a king. An ace.”
On Yeezus:
“This music is made to spark the visionaries to stand up for themselves and help the world. Because the world is fucked.”
On Christianity and Ralph Lauren:
“I’m Christian in the same way that people have issues with certain elements of Christianity. It’s like if you go into a Ralph Lauren store, maybe that buyer didn’t do the exact buy that you want, but you still really like that brand.”
On celebrities:
“Anyone who meets me for the first time and is not slightly nervous is completely full of shit. Because when I meet people I respect, I’m nervous. When I go have lunch with Tarantino at the Chateau Marmont, I’m nervous. It’s fucking Tarantino!”
On his intellect:
“Visiting my mind is like visiting the Hermès factory. Shit is real. You’re not going to find a chink. It’s 100,000 percent Jimi Hendrix.”
On his imagination:
“I live a pretty interesting life. But the life that I’m living is way less interesting than what I’m thinking.”
On the tattoo on his forearm of Madonna and Baby Jesus:
“This is me and my mommy.”
On how seriously to take him:
“You should only believe about 90 percent of what I say. As a matter of fact, don’t even believe anything that I’m saying at all. I could be completely fucking with you, and the world, the entire time.”
On his style taboos:
“Even the greatest tattoo artists in the world have a few bad tattoos. And that’s Kanye West. A few of my past outfits—questionable, you know? But I’m testing. I’m discovering who I am.”
On W’s 2010 cover of a nude Kim Kardashian:
“I loved the fact that it happened, that it disturbed people. I loved the fact that it put those curves right inside that Hamptons house, that there’s some Hamptons husbands who had to cover that up.”
On his rock-star status:
“Instead of using it to date as many supermodels as possible or to be as much of an asshole at a restaurant as possible, I would rather use it to access great minds. To be able to go to Axel Vervoordt’s castle on the first day that I meet him.”

The $15 Million iPhone | IamJuanC
As if the iPhone wasn't already costly enough, an anonymous Hong Kong business commissioned exclusive and elite gadget company Stuart Hughes of Liverpool to create an iPhone valued at approximately $15 million USD. How did they manage to make it worth that much? First of all they embedded 600 flawless white diamonds inside a solid gold dressing (the Apple logo itself is made up from 53 diamonds), and then they topped it off with a home button made from a rare 26 carat black diamond which, by itself, is worth $14.5 million USD.
Is This How The iPad Mini 2 Will Look? | IamJuanC
Dutch website MobiLeaks have unveiled a render create to show what the Apple iPad Mini 2 will look like based on some leaked specifications. According to the anonymous source, the new version of the popular tablet device will have a similar screen size to the first version - 7.9 inches - but it will be a hi-res Retina display at 2048 x 1536 pixels (324ppi). It's also claimed the iPad Mini 2 will have an 8-megapixel camera on the rear and a 2-megapixel on the front and will be 0.3mm thicker than the current option. It's unlikely Apple will reveal the new tablet at WWDC in June, so we will have to wait until later in the year to find out if the rumours are true.
Yahoo Acquire Tumblr for $1.1 Billion | IamJuanC
Well, it's official (almost). Yahoo are about to acquire social blogging site Tumblr for an approved $1.1 billion USD cash deal. The news is expected to be officially announced tomorrow during the NYC media event and will be CEO Marissa Mayer's largest deal since taking the helm of Yahoo in July 2012. The founder of Tumblr - 26-year-old New Yorker David Karp - is expected to stay in his current role as chief executive.
Since they were founded in 2007 Tumblr have grown significantly and now boast over 700 million visitors each month. However, despite this huge audience they have struggled to make money, resisting traditional advertising methods in favour of other techniques which made just $13 million USD in 2012. In fact, staff at Tumblr were apparently told the company only had enough cash to last a few more months in business, but not to worry as they were soon going to be bought out.
Will Sky City in China Become the World’s Tallest Building? | IamJuanC
Though originally reported as being possibly completed over a course of just 90 days, it seems as if Sky City will finally break ground next month. Plans for the world’s tallest building have been circulating for a while now, with developers at Broad Sustainable Building Co. previously quoting a seemingly impossible work schedule. Despite all this, when completed, the 220-story, 838-meter building will be the tallest feat of architecture standing, beating out the similarly dizzying Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Set for construction in Hunan’s capital city – Changsha – Sky City will also boast enough space for 31,000 people, a 1,000-person luxury hotel, and a school able to accommodate 4,600 children. While it’s hard to avoid the implications of such ‘super-buildings,’ the prospect of building such an edifice is impressive, to say the least. Enjoy a preview of Sky City above, and be sure to comment with thoughts below.
fragment design x Bamford Watch Department Rolex Daytona & Submariner
Known for its incredibly stylish takes on classic timepieces, Bamford Watch Department has aligned with the godfather of streetwear himself for collaborative editions of Rolex‘s Daytona and Submariner watches. Marking Hiroshi Fujiwara‘s second collaboration with BWD under his fragment design label, both watches feature a predominately black look thanks to Bamford’s signature Military Grade Titanium coating – thus lending the designs a sleek, timeless sheen. Whereas the Submariner sees the make-up combined with a blacked-out dial and subtle red accents throughout, the Daytona features a black main dial alongside white sub-dials as striking blue accents further highlight the piece. Both the Daytona and Submariner are limited to just 15 pieces with availability beginning this Friday, May 24 exclusively through inquiry via Bamford Watch Department’s website.
The Adastra Superyacht by John Shuttleworth
Five years since shipping industry billionaire Anto Marden commissioned the construction of the Adastra Superyacht, the modern marvel has recently taken the crown for “Most Innovative Design” at the 2013 World Superyacht Awards. Designer John Shuttleworth chose a trimaran shape in which the boat features multiple hulls with a main hull in the middle and two smaller outrigger hulls at its side. This one just so happens to be the second largest of its kind, but the only that can be controlled by an iPad miles away from the actual vessel. Measurements taken during sea trials show that its fuel consumption at 10.5 knots can respectfully reach as low as 17 liters per hour when carrying 10% fuel and water. Its slender hulls and streamlined exterior allow the Adastra to travel faster in the open ocean. At 17 knots the Adastra has a 4,000-mile range to comfortably cross both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans at high speeds. Furthermore, the deck and superstructure is constructed from carbon fiber with Nomex honeycomb core, while the hull is a glass/Kevlar foam sandwich as the interior offers lightweight oak cabinetry and honeycomb panels. To further reduce weight Shuttleworth specifically incorporated carbon fiber hatches, toilets, port lights and ladders. If you happen to be traveling by sea in or around Indonesia anytime soon, you may spot the Adastra Superyacht as Marden will likely be traveling between the pair of islands he owns in the region.
BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe | IamJuanC
Long-known for gracefully combining luxury with performance, BMWs rarely disappoint, and the BMW Pinifarina Gran Lusso Coupe ($TBA) certainly doesn't. The Germans have joined forces with luxury Italian designers Pininfarina to make a one-off creation boasting exclusivity and roadworthiness. The exterior is distinctly BMW, with a set-back cockpit and stretched hood covering a massive V-12 (and of course the signature kidney-shaped grill). But the interior screams Italian opulence — fine Italian leather upholstery, plaid Italian wool headliner, and accents made of kauri wood aged 48,000 years. Carmakers could learn a thing or two from this impressive partnership.
Balmain Riders Jacket | IamJuanC
Constructing another luxurious iteration to a classic silhouette, Paris fashion house Balmain has released a Riders Jacket with tones of self-assertion. Made with meticulous detail, wrinkled lamb leather panels the sturdy black body, while frontal horizontal zips dramatize the jacket with added elegance, acting as both functional and modish designs on the grainy backdrop. The leather wrist fasteners are fetching additions to the jacket, allowing wind and weather resistance. Stylish and practical, Balmain reiterates timeless staples with innate charisma. The Balmain Riders Jacket is now available at RESIR for ¥462,000 JPY (approximately $4,500 USD).
